A message from our Regional 4C Vice President:
Volunteerism: Why should I care?
Volunteerism seems strange, right? Giving your time, spending it doing things for others. Why should I go in person to help, when I can just Like, Share, Post or Retweet how I feel for a cause? Seems much easier to just sit behind the keyboard and let someone else handle the day to day stuff. It’s a big organization. They’ll do fine without my help.
I know not everyone feels this way, but there are many that do. Volunteers are the life blood of ASIS International. Without volunteers, the local chapters would not exist. Without volunteers the regional leadership would not exist. Without volunteers, the International Board of Directors would not exist. Volunteers are what make ASIS International the successful industry leader that it is.
As of August 16, 2017, in the state of Florida, there were 1146 active ASIS International members for 8 chapters. Each of those chapter needs four elected board members (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer). This means, at a minimum we need 32 volunteers, or just under 3% of the total Florida membership.
Now if we want volunteers to fill out the other voluntary positions (ASIS Foundation Liaison, Certification Chairperson, Chapter Newsletter Editor, Council Liaison, Law Enforcement Liaison, Legislative Chairperson, Membership Chairperson, Mentorship Program Chairperson, Military Liaison Chairperson, Placement Chairperson, Program Chairperson, Webmaster, Women in Security Liaison, Young Professionals Liaison) that’s 14 people. For all eight chapters, that would be 112 volunteers or 10% of the membership.
So, in a perfect world, of the 1146 ASIS International members in Florida, 144 volunteers, would fill each of the leadership roles within the chapter. That’s 13% of the members.
Want to get involved? Now is a great time to do so. Chapters across the state are beginning to plan for 2018 Board Elections. This is the time to reach out to your chapter leaders and say: “I’m in!” Not everyone can be the Chapter Chairperson, but everyone can make an impact.
Are you new to the security industry, just starting your career, and think no one wants to hear from you? Wrong! You are the future of this organization. You will take us further than we can go without you, and you will do it using new technologies and new perspectives. We need you!
Are you an established security professional nearing the end of your career, and think no one wants to hear from you? Wrong! You are the reason we have been successful. Your knowledge is still very much needed as we continue to move forward. New to the industry or seasoned professional; woman or man; WE NEED YOU!
I encourage you to step up and volunteer with your local chapter. If you don’t know where your local chapter is, or need additional information, reach out and let me know.
